Company Culture: four key signs 90% of SMEs miss
You’ve worked hard on building a positive company culture. You know that you’re a great place to work, with great people and an amazing ethos. But does this always come across to new hires and clients when you need it to: right at the start?
Alice Brandt—CEO of AOT, knew they were missing a chance to tell a key part of their story:
“I knew that we just had this fabulous mentality—a creative agency—but we weren’t getting it across at the beginning. It was like—we have this incredible team, and our clients loved working with us, but how to get that across? If Weekday Solutions were able to solve that for me, I was prepared to be impressed!”
How do you do things round yours?
In the 1980s, Deal & Kennedy worked on defining culture. They decided it was “The way we do things round here.” When you think of your company culture in this clear-cut way, it becomes easier to explain to others. They found that companies tend towards one of four areas:
Tough guy in a macho culture
Often found in finance- and sales-oriented places. Places where there is a culture of risk and reward and you can see the results of decisions fast.
Work hard, play hard
There’s a lot of activity in these companies. They tend to be larger, where decisions carry less risk, but there is a powerful need for employees to distinguish themselves.
Bet your company
Are you working on projects that are timebound, force you to commit tonnes of resources and that absolutely have to pay off? If so, you must be in a bet-your-company culture.
Process culture
Low-risk operations with a lot of bureaucracy. Process cultures tend to focus on the trees much more than the wood.
AOT: a story to tell
“After working with Weekday Solutions, I realised that AOT was a ‘Tough Guy’ culture. This surprised us because we really don’t feel macho; we have bring-your-pet-to-work days! But Weekday Solutions showed me that our team really go to bat for each other and our clients. We work incredibly hard to get the best deal for our customers. Our staff are empowered and confident to make decisions for them.”
Get your company culture working for you
Suddenly, AOT found their voice. As a service-based company, it defined their value proposition which made their marketing more effective. They also found hiring the right people easier and faster.

80% of Study Abroad students make this one pre-departure mistake
Hi Jacob
It’s February and the deadline for finalising your study abroad place is fast approaching. Have you checked the cost of flights, accommodation and signed off on your modules?
With more US students than ever choosing to study in the UK next semester it’s a real puzzle to us here at Appleside College that so few make this simple preparation tip.
Erin Clark, History major, joined us two years ago. We met her from the airport, took her to her accommodation and introduced her to her new study abroad family. Everything was going great until she sat down in her first lecture: a social history of Britain. Her tutor, Doctor Moore, explained the content of the module and Erin realised she had already covered it at her home college. Although she’d still get credit, she’d have been repeating work.
Doctor Moore soon had her enrolled in the correct class. But, when we asked Erin why she hadn’t reached out to him by email when she was choosing her classes, she explained she hadn’t wanted to bother him.
That’s why here at Appleside, as soon as you confirm your classes you get:
- a dedicated admissions-tutor, live Q&A session
- a full explanation of all your classes and how they fit with your home study
- free financial and cost-of-living-workshops
- a live “Studying in the UK” orientation session
- virtual meet & greet with current students so you have made friends before you arrive
Apply now for Fall 2022
We still have capacity for study-abroad classes beginning in Fall 2022, but places are going fast. Click here to find out how to become an Appleside study-abroad student and make memories that will last a lifetime.
